Vättern # 1

Two hours after our arrival we were already sitting in the boat heading for a big bay covered with dense reeds. Expactations were high. We finally finished the day with a few small pike mostly taken on Salmo Slider.

On Sunday we did not discover a single fishing boat whereas on high season there can be seen between twenty and thirty, as I was told later. The warm and unsteady winter caused the majority of pike to spawn four to five weeks before our arrival. We were definitely too late and there were 10 more fishing days to come!

A change of strategy, trolling instead of casting, brought at least some bigger ones. The breakthrough was Christophs 100 + that he took on a dead roach mounted to a SG Lipscull. Windy conditions with occasional rain proved to be best for trolling inside the skerries.

Although our boat was ideal for rough weather the waves on the open lake were often too high for safe fishing. Lots of fish seemed to migrate out of the skerries to Vätterns deep water where we could take at least a few of them.

The best fishing day was Tuesday, 15 May. After a standard size pike for Christoph I hooked something on my 19 cm Hybrida that behaved complety different from any other fish before. Shortly after striking it broke the surface and stood in the air for a while. In front of the boat lots of pressure was needed to bring it up for netting. Through the crystal clear water I spotted the characteristic white stripe on the edge of the pelvic fins and it was obvious what I hooked. A char! Not a giant but a wonderful fish.

At 11.30 a.m. Christoph hooked a pike on his sideplaner rod. While playing it another fish took one of his lures. As Nisse stayed at home this morning Christoph and I were now both playing a fish while still having to steer the boat. I put lots of pressure on the fish and had it quickly in the net. Then the unexpected happened: A third fish, now on my rod, striked. I don’t now how but finally we had all three of them gathered on our unhooking mat: 89 cm, 92 cm and102 cm!

A few more fish followed throughout the coming days. A further highlight was the discovery of a huge bay packed with lots of bream and pike close by. The Parrot Slider guaranteed me a clear 5:0 victory that afternoon. Without my Slider I lost 2:0 in the evening.

Looking back and taking into account the miserable fishing conditions we are now happy with what we achieved.

A few more pictures are coming pretty soon!

quiver session

Spring has finally arrived last weekend and fishing is starting to pick up. Promising carp catches are reported from a nearby pond and also the river is in great shape. Chub are extremely greedy at the moment. My experiment with luncheon meat as hook bait delivered 3 chub of around 3.5 pounds each. But for the fly rod it is still too early. In four weeks we can hopefully expect some noteworthy insect hatches.

Burusjön

Recently I was asked if I might be interested in a few days ‘work’ in northern Dalarna. Of course I was! A direct bus then brought me from Hamburg to a beautiful winter landscape in middle Sweden. Although my mission had nothing to do with fishing I nevertheless made it to a short visit to Burusjön. After 2.5 hours fishing with Neva and Sven, six arctic char and two perch came through the ice holes. But with only a single char I had to accept a defeat that day.  The mormyschka seemed to do a better job than my big spoon and a hook packed with several maggots.

tiny rewards

Some rain and heavy winds have livened things up recently. Pike seemed to be absent throughout the months of October and November. Water levels in ponds and rivers were on a summer low, paired with extreme clarity. Highlights so far are a 3.5 pound chub on a 15cm soft shad and two pike to 83cm taken on Big Bandit and giant Sandra. Yesterday I blanked completely with dead roach and sardine although fishing 4 different spots throughout the day. It can only get better!

chub on pike fly

Throughout last week I had been out for a couple of times, mostly an hour or two around late afternoon.
My mission “pike on fly” resulted in “chub on fly”. I observed quite a few decent chub following my fly. The first fish came off after playing it for a while. Another one of 2 pounds then took the size 6/0 flash-fly properly and could be landed safely.

Meanwhile masses of dead leaves have dropped from the trees into the river. Today’s drop-shot fishing became more than annoying by hooking leaves instead of perch.

happy ending

Last Friday I spent my last fishing day in Värmland. Despite bright sunshine and fishing around midday I took a decent pike from the top of a plateau. Again it was the silver/blue 4Play that proved to be successful. The lake was only one out of almost a hundred you find in and around Glaskogen Nature Reserve.

Not only the guiding but also the catering this day was perfect - thanks to Mr. Diesner!

topwater fishing

If you’re looking for some breathtaking fishing in high summer all you need is a couple of topwater lures. We had lots of fun fishing poppers of all sizes. It’s always a surprise what species and what size of fish will break through the surface - from a perch being slightly bigger than the lure to a stunning 102cm pike inhaling an 8cm popper.

The numerous small and even tiny woodland lakes around Stömnegården are pretty much suitable for that kind of fishing. The biggest fish nevertheless came from Glafsfjorden. The same water also brought Sven a hard-fighting asp yesterday. Not too bad!

summer fishing

Summer in Värmland is probably not the time for extraordinary catches but the fishing is quite satisfying so far. Nevertheless our “trout project” at a beautiful woodland lake failed totally. Fortunately I had my perch rod with me guaranteeing me at least a few decent perch.  At Glafsfjorden I had two really poor fishing days with Sven within the last week.

The turnaround finally came with a visiting friend from Germany. On my first outing with Nils I got a zander on “Nilsmaster” and a pike on “Big Bandit”. Another zander came off close to the boat.

Being a little annoyed from the zander fishing in Glafsfjorden we decided to target pike in a nearby lake. Our investment into boathire and a further annual fishing licence already payed off on our very first fishing day. Although the pike fishing is really slow at this time of the year I did quite well with catching four of them. Three of them came on a wobbler while another one was taken on jig. Nils caught just two, but he had the biggest for the day.  The water we fished definitely holds pike of 10 kg but at the moment they are still illusive to us.

A few days later we gave Glafsfjorden another try. This time with baitfish presented vertically on a fireball. It didn't take long untill Nils caught his first ever on the vertical rod - congratulations!

rudd - too big and beautiful for the fireball

zander trolling

The zander trolling on Tuesday evening brought all together 5 zander (landed) and one bigger pike. The fishing was part of Gustaf`s project “zander trolling at different speed levels”. Most productive lure was again Nilsmaster but the optimum trolling speed is kept secret. Last but not least - thanks for the guiding!

Glafsfjorden

On Monday Sven and I got our first fishing trip on Glafsfjorden. We finished the evening with a nice perch, a pike and two zander.

Originally we were planning some more fishing for today and tomorrow. But this morning we made a bad discovery. The engine is gone - stolen!

bye bye Falun

Time is over now in Falun. On Thursday we went trolling with Mathias for a few hours. The conditions for pike fishing are far from ideal right now. Air temperature is around 26 °C and the water measures around 20 °C in shallow bays. 5 small pike finally decided to take our Castaics and wobblers. On two evenings I had some fishing on my own. The biggest success was a 87 cm pike I got on my light jigging rod while fishing for perch.

If everything goes as planned I should have my first zander of the season by the end of next week. The Glafsfjorden- / Byälven system and some nearby lakes will be my fishing waters for the next two month.

another meter

This time it was Louises’ turn to take a 100+  - her personal best so far. Congratulations! All other fish we caught unfortunately measured less than 75 cm.  Nevertheless there is big fish reported by our guests every day. Today a group of 3 people took three 100+ .

Hopefully we manage to fish more than three hour periods pretty soon. But for the time invested we’re doing quite well, not least due to a 100 hp engine.

A real monster pike was caught by a guest from Poland a few days ago. Hope I can give you a link to the picture pretty soon. I’m not telling you the length yet but this fish is the current camp record!
