Sportfiskemässan

Now the season is officially opened! Below some pics from this year's Sportfiskemässan in Stockholm.  Besides all the tackle it was really nice to meet some of the former Forshaga guys - Henrik from Mörrums Kronolaxfiske, Lord Rickard and not least Christian.
One of the hottest new products for 2014 is the Westin swimbait. Some dealers on the fair had it for sale and it was completely sold only a few hours after the fair had opened. Retail price ca. 229 kr.

no more ice

Ten days ago some sheltered bays in lake Bunn were still ice-covered. Some critical spots like the small channel at Roten were covered with huge ice flakes. The float trolling brought one pike of roughly 4 kilos. It took at 6 meters depth. All attempts with slowly fished softlures remained without the slightest action. No pike in shallow water yet.

Last Saturday I found a spot with lots of echoes in Mellan Bunn. But stormy conditions made float trolling difficult and no fish came up. Sunday then Landsjön: moderate wind but shunshine. 4 pike up to 2 kilos, all over weed beds at 2-3 meters depth. Again float trolling was the winning method.

Svartån

Right now there is hardly any chance for good fishing. Weak ice on  all lakes and the salmon fishing in Vättern is always a big gamble. So I decided to visit Svartån (the black stream) in Tranås. One small pike and lots of rain and snow.

the small final

Plus temperatures throughout the whole day and it is going to continue the next week. The spontaneous decision for a final session was rewarded with 3 pike (2.5, 3.5, 3.8) within 30 minutes, on 3 different rods . No monsters but much bigger than the ones from my float trolling sessions. Hmm, Vättern next weekend?

pike fishing

Last weekend even in Småland the ice was strong enough for the first icefishing trip. I choosed a lake that is well known for its big zander. Today, after my third session I'm still without a zander. No problem - I a caught a couple of nice pike. The photo above shows a 4.5 kilo fish from todays session. Last weekend I could not take pictures at all - minus temperatures and extreme winds had otherwise caused frostbite to the fishes within seconds. And that's not worth it! The biggest  predator from last weekend of around 7 kilos was directly returned.

successful guiding

The guiding for a group of Germans brought 9 char and a perch alltogether. For most of my guests it was the first time going fishing. So we can be very happy with the result. The winner of the day took 2 char and 1 perch. The biggest fish of the day weighed around 1,5 pounds.

lucky guide - the holes were drilled at the right spot...

float trolling

The warm weather in Småland makes it possible to go float trolling in early January. The trip was more or less a spontaneous decision and ended with three small pike (up to 2 kg) after 5 hours of fishing. Before Christmas I had stored all my usual fishing equipment and replaced it by ice fishing gear. But there is no ice at all. The weatherforecast so far promises minus temperatures from next week onwards. Keep fingers crossed for proper ice by the end of January.

rödingpremiär

On Saturday we had 'opening day' on some char fishing waters in northern Dalarna. Some nice fish finally made their way through the icehole. Another trip on Wednesday was really tough. Minus 15° C and windy conditions ask for the real fishermen!

salmo salar

Last Saturday it was time again for some 'landlaxfiske' at Vättern. The result after 9 hours of casting was a small salmon that had to be returned again. On Sunday then I had to quit fishing early because of extreme winds.
Pretty much the same this Sunday. The well planned float trolling trip for pike was finished early. Next weekend will be the last chance for pike fishing this year. In two weeks it will be time again for char fishing from the ice in Dalarna.

Vättern shore fishing

Now I've found another interesting fishing challenge. Fishing for salmon and char from Vättern's rocky shore. Just rod, net and rucksack! My first visit to the area around Hästholmen was not successfull. When arriving at the spot there where only two other anglers. An hour later there were roughly 12 people in the area, occuping the best spots. I got really p...ed off as I turned around and less than ten meters away a guy started fishing. Not even asking if I would mind!

At the end of the day I observed only one angler taking a fish, closely before sunset - that was it! The water is still too warm as I got told later.

beautiful coastline but also dangerous to fish

Last week I tried my luck just 10 minutes away from my home, always for an hour around sunset. On Wednesday I got the first contact on a bombarda-fished fly. But I did not hook it properly...

never without flotation suit / lifejacket

Besides this the Vättern char are now coming into the harbours of Husvarna and Gränna for their spawning. Lots of spectators are watching them from the pier. After some rainfall even Röttleån should now get its annuall trout-run. I observed two fish of around 2 pounds last Saturday.

         Röttleån south of Gränna

Last but not least I had to test-run my new Minn Kota on a quick vertical fishing trip. 5 pike, the biggest not more than 60 cm. Next weekend I might try a new fishing water. Perhaps float trolling...

massive clouds of prey fish - but where do the big ones hide?

october update

The first and the second weekend in October I didn't have time to fish. But this weekend and the weekend before I once again visited lake Bunn. Although I never went home without a fish in the boat, the size of the pike could have been better - the big September-pike seemed to be disappeared...
Yesterday then, I decided to fish some shallow areas with jerkbait as the deeper areas only produced smaller fish. The two biggest pike of the day came on a 'Fatso'. Besides this I took six more - one on a trolled ShadRap, ther reamaining five on jig.
So far I haven't caught any zander and also the perch fishing might be something to focus on.

Norra Bunn

What a weekend! New fishing water, no clue where to go but fish anyway. The weight was from roughly 7 kilos down to around 4 kilos for the top three. Fishing on my own - the landing net lying at home - made the measuring and photographing pretty difficult. Bloody fingers and a mess in the boat. A 94 cm fish and also an elk swimming through the lake did not make it to the camera. You can't have everything...

Södrasjön

After all the flyfishing in Norway we finally decided to spent two relaxed days at Södrasjön before driving home. I' ve never seen the water level so low the years before. Water clarity of more than 5 meters and lots of sunshine made the fishing really slow. Only a few pike could be convinced to try our lures. We caught fish on jerkbait, jig and wobbler.

beautiful weather - too beautiful for good fishing

grayling in Norway

Four years ago we tried some fly fishing for grayling in river Storån and Grövlan, northern Dalarna. The fishing that time proved to be really poor so that we decided to test a new water this autumn - the Glomma in Norway. In six and a half fishing days we caught between 80 to 100 grayling alltogether. Unfortunately we had to invest lots of time in finding good fishing spots. The spots close to the official car parks face continious fishing pressure by lazy fishermen. Legal fishing methods are also spinning and float fishing with maggot, worm and other. But nevertheless the river still holds a good stock of grayling. And 250 NOK for a week are not bad either.

Skåne & Värmland

It is meanwhile 3 weeks ago that I fished together with Robban in Skåne. The Sunday morning session with only one jack pike for my fishing friend was quite slow. The next day at lake Tydingen I had the chance to take the lead in our small fishing competition but failed to hook 2 fish. After a fish in the afternoon Robban took three pike in a row on his spinnerbait and let no doubt about who would have to pay the pizza that day. Last but not least thanks a lot for accomodation during our fishing trip.

Two days later I already met with Gustaf for a quick fishing trip to Nysockensjön. The result after 7 hours of fishing was much better than I would have expected before. All in all 2 perch (top at 1.04kg), 5 zander and 6 pike (top at 99 cm). The funny thing was that Gustaf not only took the biggest fishes but also the most. But by the end of the day I finally recognized that I got probably beaten by his jigging technique. The last 20 minutes with the proper technique I managed to take 2 small zander in a row. Thanks for the fishing lesson :)

carp & catfish

I finished my fourth session at Igelsbachsee this morning with two carp, a bream and a catfish. The hottest day of the year so far (34°C) could not stop the fishes from feeding. The catfish was meanwhile the second one for me. The first one I hooked on an evening session 3 weeks ago. Now I am glad to be sitting at home with a cool beer.

Igelsbachsee part 2

Now I can say that my carp fishing plans were far too optimistic. My project "30-pounder" failed! The prebaiting of my fishing spot was fortunately not completely useless. Three mirror carp (22,  17.5, and 6 pounds) and two bream (4.5 and 4 pounds) made it finally to the landing net. It was raining all day long and on the way back to my car I got the final 'shower'.

midsummer carping

It was a good decision not to go predator fishing this weekend. The hot weather of the last couple of days raised the water temperature to over 20° C. At quarter past five this morning my carp fishing session started. Twelve hours later it was over. The result: two mirror carp, 21 and 27.5 pounds, both taken on a halibut pellet.

Brombachsee

At around 7.30 I caught the first zander of the season - on a jig at 5 meters depth. The spot was close to where I caught 3 pike last Sunday. The weather forecast for the coming weekend is big rain and low temperatures. No reason to stay at home as the fishing seems to be really hot right now.

tench & pike

The opening day of the pike season on the 1st. of May was a desaster to make it short. 3 people fishing and no fish landed. We only had some followers and contacts of mostly jack pike. The idea to start the season at a nearby gravel pit wasn't good at all. Too many spinfishers and carpfishermen blocking our fishing spots. But even other anglers reported poor predator catches from their fisheries.
The idea to switch to tench fishing was a brilliant substitute for the poor pike fishing. And thanks to Nisse and C.S. for prebaiting and tackle!

And on the 4th. of May it was time for pike fishing again. The result: 2 river pike on bucktail spinner and soft shad for my fishing fellows.
