chub on pike fly
Throughout last week I had been out for a couple of times, mostly an hour or two around late afternoon.
My mission “pike on fly” resulted in “chub on fly”. I observed quite a few decent chub following my fly. The first fish came off after playing it for a while. Another one of 2 pounds then took the size 6/0 flash-fly properly and could be landed safely.
Meanwhile masses of dead leaves have dropped from the trees into the river. Today’s drop-shot fishing became more than annoying by hooking leaves instead of perch.

Temperatures are dropping, leaves are falling - pike-time!

happy ending
Last Friday I spent my last fishing day in Värmland. Despite bright sunshine and fishing around midday I took a decent pike from the top of a plateau. Again it was the silver/blue 4Play that proved to be successful. The lake was only one out of almost a hundred you find in and around Glaskogen Nature Reserve.
Not only the guiding but also the catering this day was perfect - thanks to Mr. Diesner!
topwater fishing
If you’re looking for some breathtaking fishing in high summer all you need is a couple of topwater lures. We had lots of fun fishing poppers of all sizes. It’s always a surprise what species and what size of fish will break through the surface - from a perch being slightly bigger than the lure to a stunning 102cm pike inhaling an 8cm popper.
The numerous small and even tiny woodland lakes around Stömnegården are pretty much suitable for that kind of fishing. The biggest fish nevertheless came from Glafsfjorden. The same water also brought Sven a hard-fighting asp yesterday. Not too bad!
summer fishing
Summer in Värmland is probably not the time for extraordinary catches but the fishing is quite satisfying so far. Nevertheless our “trout project” at a beautiful woodland lake failed totally. Fortunately I had my perch rod with me guaranteeing me at least a few decent perch. At Glafsfjorden I had two really poor fishing days with Sven within the last week.
The turnaround finally came with a visiting friend from Germany. On my first outing with Nils I got a zander on “Nilsmaster” and a pike on “Big Bandit”. Another zander came off close to the boat.
Being a little annoyed from the zander fishing in Glafsfjorden we decided to target pike in a nearby lake. Our investment into boathire and a further annual fishing licence already payed off on our very first fishing day. Although the pike fishing is really slow at this time of the year I did quite well with catching four of them. Three of them came on a wobbler while another one was taken on jig. Nils caught just two, but he had the biggest for the day. The water we fished definitely holds pike of 10 kg but at the moment they are still illusive to us.
A few days later we gave Glafsfjorden another try. This time with baitfish presented vertically on a fireball. It didn't take long untill Nils caught his first ever on the vertical rod - congratulations!
rudd - too big and beautiful for the fireball
zander trolling
The zander trolling on Tuesday evening brought all together 5 zander (landed) and one bigger pike. The fishing was part of Gustaf`s project “zander trolling at different speed levels”. Most productive lure was again Nilsmaster but the optimum trolling speed is kept secret. Last but not least - thanks for the guiding!
highlight - front mounted engine!

Glafsfjorden
On Monday Sven and I got our first fishing trip on Glafsfjorden. We finished the evening with a nice perch, a pike and two zander.
Originally we were planning some more fishing for today and tomorrow. But this morning we made a bad discovery. The engine is gone - stolen!
bye bye Falun
Time is over now in Falun. On Thursday we went trolling with Mathias for a few hours. The conditions for pike fishing are far from ideal right now. Air temperature is around 26 °C and the water measures around 20 °C in shallow bays. 5 small pike finally decided to take our Castaics and wobblers. On two evenings I had some fishing on my own. The biggest success was a 87 cm pike I got on my light jigging rod while fishing for perch.
If everything goes as planned I should have my first zander of the season by the end of next week. The Glafsfjorden- / Byälven system and some nearby lakes will be my fishing waters for the next two month.
another meter
This time it was Louises’ turn to take a 100+ - her personal best so far. Congratulations! All other fish we caught unfortunately measured less than 75 cm. Nevertheless there is big fish reported by our guests every day. Today a group of 3 people took three 100+ .
Hopefully we manage to fish more than three hour periods pretty soon. But for the time invested we’re doing quite well, not least due to a 100 hp engine.
A real monster pike was caught by a guest from Poland a few days ago. Hope I can give you a link to the picture pretty soon. I’m not telling you the length yet but this fish is the current camp record!
Argos Active - Falun
My first fishing day at lake Runn proved to be quite o.k. - honestly speaking you can't have a better start. Fishing over 2 m deep water my Fatso jerkbait was taken by a decent pike. The measure finally showed 110 cm. But nevertheless the first fish for our boat was taken by Louise. A small pike couldn't resist her trolled Westins. I took another small one on a Zalt before going home after 2,5 hours of fishing and lots of rain.
We're hoping for many more fish to come within the next weeks.
trolling - lake Vänern
countryside ride
This morning I cycled with Sebastian and Christian to unexplored water. Pike was the species we were aiming at with both fly and jerk. Accessibility was quite fine at first, bringing me a baby pike on a Slider. Crawling further on through dense bush leads me to a small overgrown backwater. It took not more than five casts before I hooked into another slightly bigger fish.
We fished on - now what looked fly fisherman’s paradise. Crossing flooded grassland Sebastian enjoyed some unplanned wet wading in his trainers. Although fishing on for a while in beautiful sunshine we took up no further. The burning sun lets us finally give up around noon.
Happy Easter to all of you!
Sportfiskemässan
From Friday till Sunday „Sportfiskemässan“, Swedens biggest trade fair for sport fishing, was held in Jönköping. Slightly over 11.000 visitors marked a new visitor record. We already arrived on Thursday to set up our stand. Besides informing about our education programmes we invited visitors to some basic flytying, wire trace making and welding loops on flylines. Anybody who did not make it to the opening day of the sea trout season at the west coast had the chance to play the season’s first at our simulator.
Other exhibiting companies were e.g. Normark (Shimano), Abu (Pure Fishing), CWC (StrikePro), BIOS (Daiwa), FlyDressing (Vision), Guideline and Svendsen (Savage Gear). And not to forget the numerous tackle shops and travel agents.
Some Swedish and also foreign sport fishing celebrities showed up as well:
Trumman and Falklind
Luc Coppens demonstrating his dropshot rig
Vänern pimpling
Last Thursday and also today we were out for some pimpel fishing on Vänern. On Thursday Henric and I got a pimpel fishing lesson from Fredrik. The most obvious proof that successful pimpling is more than being lucky. But it’s also about being tough - temperatures that morning were at -14°C.
Today we left Bergsgården at more favourable temperatures of around -2°C. After 9 hours of non-stop pimpling our fishing day was finally over. The result was definitely satisfying. The average weight was higher than a few days ago and we even took two slightly bigger perch.

pimpel fishing
Pimpel instead of pike was my major interest throughout the last couple of days. And sometimes it payes off as you can see below.
At Skutberget last Saturday we primarily enjoyed the wonderful sunshine. We just took some 7 perch within 4 hours of fishing. The enormous dimensions of lake Vänern made one feel a little lost.
Cloudy and windy weather on Wednesday finally brought us amusing fishing at Skoghall. Apart from perch we mainly hooked smelt on our mormyschkas and little spoons. Even two ruffes and a bream showed up. The smelt were more than welcome as our baitfish stocks are almost finished.
This weekend we targeted lake Visten. The fish were extremely difficult to spot. They tended to be spread over vast areas. No ice hole produced more than two fish. All in all we did not hit the jackpot but it was nice fishing anyway.
all you need - pimpel rod for some 6 euros!
underperformance
Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday we spent out fishing without a single fish being caught. Thursday and Friday evening we fished two spots in Vänern that were recommended to us. The targeted fish was "Lota lota" (burbot).
Saturday and Sunday we proved river Klarälven for pike. Some days before two colleagues had superior fishing on a secret spot downstream Forshaga. We tried one of "our" backwaters that produced good fish in autumn.
That’s life! But good company and humor saved the fishless weekend.
Since yesterday I proudly own four ice fishing rods that will hopefully meet some hungry pike next weekend. And not to forget Lota lota - there was one caught of 3kg in a nearby lake today...
ice pike!
We’re sitting with our chairs on the frozen surface of a lake somewhere in Värmland. We must be doing something wrong because we’re not running like the other anglers around us. Within the first two hours of fishing we observe numerous fish being caught. Daniel is the first of us to run to his rod - nothing! Then two inert bleeps from my bite alarm make me run next.
Oh yes, my first ice fishing pike! Emil and Gustav assist me with the landing and unhooking of the fish while Daniel puts it all on film. I only have to play the fish and pose - great service!
After that I manage to take even another fish. While already packing up it is Gustav to take the last fish for the day. Tackle and technique prove to be o.k. but in the end we are too slow in spotting the fish.
back to business
After 10 seconds of fishing the first fish for 2011 was caught - a perch on pimpel rod from Idresjön, Dalarna. Unfortunately this fish remained the only one. As there is no serious skiing in Värmland the trip to Idre was designated for this type of activities.
Back in Värmland there is hopefully lots of ice fishing to come within the next weeks. Tomorrow the second term at Forshaga Akademin is going to start with courses like sport fishing tourism and the commercial boat licence.
Have a great fishing year!

Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year to all of you!
arctic char
The Bergsgården “ice fishing - army” proved a more or less unknown lake in the woodlands of south eastern Värmland. None of us went home without catching at least one arctic char. For me and some others these were even the first arctic char ever. “Rödingblänke” and maggot proved to be the most successful method. Although I was a little sceptical referring my tackle I did quite well with 4 fish.
The biggest of almost 2 kilos was taken by the “gubbe” Johan.
The char varied a lot in colour. Some of them with beautiful shining red bellies...
others appearing in dark colours. But the majority was more pale in colour. Air temperature around -2 °C and occasional snowfall made fishing quite comfortable.
