Summer Fishing School

In July and August I am giving some fishing lessons. These two guys listened very well to their teacher and caught a pike cracking the magical 1 meter mark. Probably the highlight of their summer holiday.

The courses address to anybody with little or no fishing experience at all. Kids and families are very welcome. The intention of the courses is more than `just´ catching fish. How do I set up a fishing rod properly? How to spot fish? How do I handle my catch? Moreover we would like to give some valuable advice to get started with your fishing.

night trolling

The overnight trolling session last week was rewarded with a nice zander. The fish was caught at 4:30 am, just a few minutes after sunrise. Right now it`s awfully hot with water temperatures above 20 degrees.

the bigger the lure...

...the bigger the fish. Normal size wobblers (20cm) delivered numbers but no quality on recent fishing trips. So it was time again for some BullDawg fishing. Although it was a rather slim pike it exceeded the magical meter. Water temperature is now above 15 degrees and remains high even when air temperatures drops a lot.

disastrous spring in northern Värmland

Yes, I´m still fishing, but....

The spring fishing in northern Värmland was extremely bad. I focussed too much on one of the big lakes. While anybody else was fishing for burbot and zander I was the only one fishing 100% pike. Even some warm and sunny spells did not activate the fish. The over 70m deep lake does have its own rules.

Another thing that irritates me a lot is the very peaty water in most of the lakes. But now I´ve finally found a lake that is much clearer  and that even delivered pike on the third cast.

Summer will finally arrive within the coming days!

       beautiful but not that fishy

10 days in Värmland #4

On Wednesday we had some diffiuculties to reach our fishing spot. Fog all over the lake. After the fog had disappeared it was sunny and completely windstill. The spinnfishing with Gustaf that day did not deliver a single fish.

The last days we focussed mainly on the deeper areas outside some bigger spawning bays.

...but where is "The 3rd. Man" ? Well, he was not seen in the boat that often. But Sweden has so much more to offer than pike fishing :)

10 days in Värmland #3

Great fishing continued. But this day we changed tactics to trolling. The lake was too big and fish could be standing anywhere.

We were more than lucky with the weather. Only three hours of fishing in the rain. On day 5 the fishing slowed down a bit. On monday morning we replaced our big lures by small wobblers to try some trout fishing. After six hours we decided to go home for a cup of coffee. The trout were obviously not in the right mood. The pike fishing on late afternoon was very slow as well. But at least one fish showed up over 25 meter deep water.

The following day I took a pike on my biggest lure. The Double Dawg Pounder was swallowed by a 8 kilo pike.

10 days in Värmland #2

On day 2 and day 3 fishing madness continued. This time it was Christoph who took the big ones - three fish of 100+ ! Besides this we caught numbers of 'smaller' pikes and the only zander for the trip.

10 days in Värmland #1

Ten days of intensive pike fishing have now come to an end. The streategy to go for size instead for numbers has paid off this time. The choice of our fishing waters was made spontaneous. So thanks to all of you who provided us with some up to date information. More pictures will follow in the coming days.

Sportfiskemässan

The past weeks I did not have that much time for fishing and all attempts so far were not worth mentioning. The lakes in northern Värmland are still covered with ice. Some trout streams are meanwhile accessable but my fly rod is still in Småland. The same goes for my boat including further fishing equipment. But in the middle of April I`ll get all my stuff up here.
On Friday it was ones again time for Sportfiskemässan. The highlight of course the live broadcast of the `fly vs. jerk´ final. Further a visit at Stjärnås Sportfiske. A check of my tackle boxes earlier this week showed some remaining space that needed to be filled :) Thanks to Christian for the `little´ discount.

Aurora Borealis

Aurora Borealis or simply polar lights. If it does affect the fishing? I don`t know! Feel free to post your theories in the comment box.

Last but not least - have a great start into the 2016 fishing season!

...thanks to Martin for sending me the picture

artic charr aka fjällröding

Night temperatures were down to -17c the last two days. Lots of sunshine and hardly no snow on the ice. In other words charr fishing can hardly be better. But now we badly need snow! Skiing conditions are very, very poor all over Sweden.

Herr Karlsson på besök

I got recently visited by 'Herr Karlsson' and of course we had to visit some nearby lakes. Float trolling did not deliver at all. Instead rubber and plastic did. Pike were feeding much closer to the surface than expected. No others boats out fishing at temperatures around zero, water between 4 - 6 C.

perch for dinner

Trolling and spin fishing for pike in a nearby water did not bring any pike at all. Instead quite a few zander up to 3 kg.  No real surprise as the lake is usually known for its zander fishing. At another water I made some occasional pike catches but no monsters. Most of the other anglers at this lake were fishing for perch. For a good reason as I found out later. Some areas were holding prey fish permanently. So I combined pike fishing with some “boat pimple”. A vertical lure on the ice fishing rod did the job.

Within the coming days temperatures will drop to sub-zero level. Winter is approaching.

celebrating 5 th. anniversary

Time to celebrate the 5th anniversary of ANGLING.BLOGG.SE !

Thanks to all of you who contributed with good company and not least fantastic catches. Here the first blog picture: Alexander fighting with a Klarälven pike on the 14th. of August 2010. Maybe you´ll find yourself somewhere in the gallery.

Cheers!

report from new lake

Fishing continuous to be very slow. Jig, Jerk, trolling and float trolling did not work as I expected at the new fishing water. No session with more than 4 fish in the boat and only one 100+. Expectations have risen a lot throughout recent years. So, time to switch to yet another water.

autumn kick-off

The kick-off for this autumn was pretty much up and down. In fact it was more `down´ than `up´.The over all number of fish caught was very low. Water temperature still around 13-14°C and air temperature between 14-18°C. Lots of sunshine with mostly blue sky. The best fishing day ended with 5 pike landed while 4 of them were 100+. Unfortunately no new pb for Robban while Gustaf delivered as usual.

warm up

Throughout the last days I started with some `warm up exercises´ for our upcoming pike fishing trip. Yesterday was the best day so far. Two pike of around 90cm, plus a top fish of 107 cm, 8.4 kilo, taken on the DoubleDawg Pounder! But this is just the beginning...

July pics

Finally, summer in Sweden. Actually the summer was not that sunny and warm as the following pictures might suggest.

Double Dawg Pounder & Co

Yet another pike taken on the Double Dawg Pounder. Also the smaller Double Dawg Magnum caught pike so far. Some of you might still be sceptical regarding the size but I am meanwhile fully convinced of these lures. On a recent trip I had all action on this lure. The smaller 20cm wobbler did not deliver at all. My theory so far: Due to their size the XXL lures are highly visible against the sky. It is a proper meal and the pike will raise even from very deep water to take it.

Trolling over 25m depth and waiting for the pelagic pike to raise for an evening meal...

Dalarna

The weekend before midsummer I was in Idre, not only for fishing. The mountaintops were still covered in snow and insect hatches were close to zero. The evening fishing in a beautiful small stream gave no result at all. Instead conditions for pike fishing looked very promising. But fishing from a canoe with strong winds is no pleasure. So I gave up after two hours with at least one fish taken. The other day we cheated a bit to get a fish on the fly. Some locals recommended a very nice woodland lake with a stock of hungry rainbows.

fascinating wildlife and a completely different landscape within a few hours drive from
       Småland

24h fishing is possible at this time of the year.
